Internal, or soft martial arts are those which use the powewr of internal 'chi' energy rather than external muscular power. Internal martial arts, such as Tai Chi, Bagua Zhang or Xing Yi Quan, are composed largely of fluid relaxed movements which are practiced in set patterns called 'forms', prior to learning the actual self-defense applications. Many people practice internal martial arts not only for self-defense, but also for their renowned ability to improve health and vitality and to increase longevity.
