Meditation is simply controlling the thought process and as such can take many different forms. Meditation can be used to increase relaxation and combat stress, to help regulate and balance the body improving health, to establish a connection between the conscious and subconscious minds or to solve problems. Meditation is best known, however, as spiritual practice for attaining enlightenment. Most people automatically associate this kind of meditation with Buddhism and with trying to empty the mind of all thought, but there are actually many different types of meditation both within Buddhism and in other spiritual traditions such as kabbalah, Hinduism, and so on.
