If you are interested in starting qi gong practice then there are a few basic exercises which everyone should do and
that provide a great introduction for beginners. Probably the most fundamental and universally practiced exercises is called
'lifting the sky'. It is not very physically strenuous, does not require flexibility or fitness, and can be easily learned
by anyone.
Watch the video below for a demonstration of the technique. You should begin by emptying your lungs as fully as possible,
and then you should inhale as your arms go up and exhale as you bring your arms down. At the top of the movement with your
palms facing upwards you should try to stretch your spine as fully as you can, holding your breath for the duration of the
brief pause as you push upwards with your palms, imagining that you are holding up the sky, and separating heaven fom
the earth. At the bottom of the movement when your hands are held in front of you push down with your palms whilst again holding
your breath for a moment; be careful not to lean forwards and bend your back as you do this.
The number of repetitions is up to you, but I would recommend at least 8 to make it worthwhile. This is good for general
health as it helps to open up the central meridian and stimulates the flow of chi throughout the body.
I find that this exercise is particularly good to do first thing in the morning, as it is in harmony with your natural instincts
to stretch and open yourself up for the day.
